Artist Statement
Storytelling through image making has been an integral means by which to communicate with the masses throughout history. The story of today is not so different from what it was a thousand years ago. Timeless themes resonate in a modern world and continue to connect even the most divergent societal divisions. Always, I have been cursed or blessed with a very active imagination. While reading Newton, Tolstoy, or Aristotle, my imagination encouraged my understanding of the worlds they presented. My mind began to expand with observations from life, from my travels spanning six continents, and from all the fascinating subjects that I’ve studied, either within the formal structure of schooling or independently. Through my paintings I strive to reawaken a sort of contemporary mythology by means of classical techniques and themes. I am interested in paralleling ideas of artist as maker, intellectual, and storyteller by playing with the composition, surfaces, subjects, and settings within the picture to introduce unique forms of harmony and dissonance with the intent to draw the viewer to delve deeper into the various messages of the image awakening the self in its response.
