About the Artist
The realist paintings and drawings of D. Read Lockhart capture lovely figures and portraits, charming landscapes, and sweet objects-- images that tell a simple story at first glance-- but when you sit down with the artist you find that his pictures are infused with deep running metaphors that take residence in his thoughts throughout the process of making each of his pieces.
Lockhart carefully selects his sources according to a conglomeration of ideas of light and shadow, stillness and movement, moments and memory, life, and the passage of time. Often he visits a site multiple times, arranges and rearranges his models, and plays with still life objects in endless combinations, before ever touching brush to canvas. Attracted to the infinite nuances of the brush his works rise up off the canvas while following powerful two-dimensional geometries in their composition.
